CKC Good Food® is all about kids and delicious food. Our founder, Nancy Close, is from a restaurant family with deep ties in the Twin Cities. She ran Caravan Serai, the first Afghan restaurant in the United States, for many years. At the restaurant she learned not only how to cook, but how to give guests a wonderful dining experience. The warmth and graciousness of the Afghan culture was on display every night at the restaurant. Nancy loved it and thought she’d be in the restaurant business forever.
Funny things can happen though when you’re busy making plans. In the early 90s, her brother, David, and his wife were running a children’s daycare center. As their attendance grew, David asked Nancy for help preparing and serving meals for the kids. They were quickly outgrowing their capabilities to provide in-house lunches, and Nancy put the restaurant kitchen to good use. After two years she was providing 130 meals a day to the day care center.
She found making meals for children every bit as fulfilling as running the restaurant…and then some. They soon added three charter schools to their roster. Nancy went on a mission finding new ways to tempt kids' taste buds, while incorporating the same fresh, high quality ingredients used to prepare meals for her demanding restaurant guests.
A new business was born: Caravan Kids Catering. Nancy and her team reached out to private and charter schools and found a ready audience for tasty, nutritious school lunches. Many client schools lacked the kitchen space to prepare in-house meals, but they wanted to offer delicious, hot meals to their students. The CKC team constantly looked for ways to streamline preparation, increase taste and improve delivery methods to the schools.
In 2001, Nancy made the difficult decision to close the restaurant to focus on Caravan Kids Catering. In 2007, the team changed the company name to CKC Good Food, reflecting a broader reach into the market – and emphasizing the continual quest to provide “good food” for as many kids as possible.
Today, CKC Good Food provides over 20,000 school lunches, breakfasts and after-school snacks and dinners daily. All of them meet or exceed the guidelines laid out in the Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act (HHFKA).
Throughout the company’s growth, Nancy has surrounded herself with fellow professionals dedicated to providing the best-tasting, highest quality school meals possible. Over 100 employees put their heart and soul into their work every day. From delivery drivers, to sandwich makers, to the dietitian – they are passionate about the ingredients, the food, the experience…and most of all…the kids.
