Inventory Tracking System Minimizes Shortages

Note: This post is adapted from an Orca Scan case study.

Since starting as Inventory Analyst at CKC Good Food, Steve Fleming tried several inventory management systems to monitor and track deliveries, stock in the warehouse and shipments. Because the company provides more than 125,000 meals a week, deliveries and shipments move quickly in and out of the warehouse making it difficult to have real-time data of inventory on hand.

Steve implemented the Orca Scan Inventory Tracking Solution to take control of stock counts and digitize the process to save time and increase efficiencies. He uses Orca Scan to track all the food received and stored at the warehouse or at client sites, from fresh fruits and vegetables, to meats, and dairy, and non-perishables. He also tracks the manufacturer, brand name, food type - i.e. breakfast food or lunch item - and case size, quantity, and cost per case and per serving. With this information at his fingertips, Steve can monitor costs per meal to help the company stay below the alloted contract costs for federal nutrition programs.

The system alsoenables the warehouse team to scan barcodes on cases of food received each day with a handy mobile app, which will auto-upload into Orca Scan.

With these counts, Orca Scan has provided the team with a more accurate count of all stock on hand in the warehouse, allowing them to determine what needs to be ordered and when. This helps reduce food waste and minimize substitutions on the company's menus.

Orca Scan has made a huge difference to Steve and has positively impacted warehouse, procurement and menu planning team members, who can now easily access the correct data when they need it.
